Following a visit to Alabama last weekend, four-star wide receiver Malachi Toney of American Heritage Plantation High School has de-committed from the University of Miami.
Last month, Toney also re-classified from the Class of 2026 to 2025 where he was committed to the Hurricanes since August of 2023.
According to 247Sports, Toney is ranked the No. 25 wide receiver in the nation as well as the No. 34 overall ranked prospect in the state of Florida.
The 5-10 182-pound wide receiver was in Tuscaloosa for Alabama’s matchup with Georgia and are currently leading the race in Toney’s recruitment, according to multiple recruiting services.
So far this season, Toney has 38 catches for 585 yards and 8 touchdowns in six games for the Patriots. As a junior, Toney had 49 catches for 773 yards and 8 touchdowns.
With Toney’s de-commitment the Hurricanes currently stand at just one wide receiver commitment in Central (Phenix City, Ala.) four-star Daylyn Upshaw who committed back in July.
Four-star safety Bryce Fitzgerald, out of Christopher Columbus High School in Miami remains the biggest commit in the Hurricanes’ upcoming recruiting cycle. Also near the top of the recruitment cycle feature four-star linebacker Gavin Nix, four-star running back Girard Pringle, four-star tight end Brock Schott, four-star quarterback Luke Nickel, four-star safety Hylton “Drake” Stubbs, and four-star defensive back Chris Ewald Jr.
247Sports Recruiting Analyst Andrew Ivins on Toney: Inside receiver with the skills to emerge as a high-volume target and a go-to playmaker in a spread attack. Elected to forgo his senior year of high school and reclassify after putting up big numbers as an underclassman for one of South Florida’s top talent-producing programs. Size has not been third-party verified, but is believed to be hovering right around 5-foot-10.5, 180 pounds. Has proven to be extremely efficient working out of a slot alignment as he uses his acceleration and agility to create separation on underneath routes. Advanced eye control and soft hands can lead to highlight-reel worthy grabs. Might not win every foot race, but is evasive after the catch and can avoid would-be tacklers with his quick feet. Will likely face a major adjustment period as he will initially be one of the youngest players on the college roster of his choice, but projects as a potential impact player on Saturdays if he can keep progressing and fine-tuning his craft.
