In late July, four-star safety Demetres Samuel out of Heritage High School in Palm Bay, Florida flipped his commitment from Syracuse to Florida. During the process, he also re-classified from the Class of 2026 to 2025.
On Sunday evening, Samuel announced on his social media platforms that he is flipping back from Florida to Syracuse. During his recruitment process, Samuel held 26 offers from notable schools such as Alabama, Auburn, Baylor, Duke, Illinois, Iowa State, Kentucky, and several others.
Samuel took an official visit last week, telling On3Recruits.com “I watched practice on Thursday and I love the environment with what the coaches are doing.” Coach Fran is building an SEC-type program at Syracuse.” Samuel added.
According to 247Sports, Samuel is the No. 21 ranked safety and the No. 38 overall ranked prospect in the state of Florida.
Samuel has football in his family bloodlines as he is the younger cousin of former Florida Gator safety Marcus Maye, who has played in the NFL for the New York Jets, New Orleans Saints and is currently with the Miami Dolphins.
With Samuel the latest to commit to Syracuse, the Orange currently stands at 29 commitments in the Class of 2025, and just the first safety.
Here’s a Scouting Report on Samuel, via 247Sports: Versatile defensive back prospect that reclassified and plans to forgo his senior season of high school. Has been utilized in a variety of different roles at the prep level, but ceiling might be highest as a split safety with his range and ball skills. Testing profile is full of green numbers as he has gone 4.65 on the lasers in the 40-yard dash and owns a 4.4 effort in the short shuttle. More notably, is believed to be pushing 6 feet with some additional length in the arms, which in turn could lead to look on the outside. Should be viewed as a developmental defender with a promising set of tools. Likely will need some time to get adjusted to big-time college football as he’s tracking to enroll at just 17 years old, but showed time and time again on the offseason camp circuit that he’s not afraid to compete in coverage.
